COMPUTER ASSISTANT

In order to qualify, you must meet the specialized experience requirements described in the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualification Standards for General Schedule Positions, Group Coverage Qualification for Clerical and Administrative Support Positions This position has known promotion potential to the GS-09. After successfully completing and meeting the training and education requirements, meeting time and grade restrictions, complying with all regulatory requirements, and supervisor's recommendation, the incumbent may be promoted to GS-09. SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE FOR GS-7:
Applicants must have at least one (1) year of specialized experience at the next lower grade GS-06, or equivalent in other pay systems. Examples of specialized experience includes applying knowledge of the basic principles, concepts, and methodology used in Computer Operations field to perform moderately difficult assignments, gather and analyze basic facts, draw conclusions and to learn the operation of automated data systems. SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE FOR GS-8:
Applicants must have at least one (1) year of specialized experience at the next lower grade GS-07, or equivalent in other pay systems. Examples of specialized experience includes operating one computer system dedicated to receive/relaying messages and another large-scale computer system operating in a multiprocessing/multiprogramming environment to process incoming and/or generate outgoing message/data traffic; solving operating problems that do not respond to standard computer console command combinations and procedures and using diagnostic test programs to isolate the cause of problems, choose a course of action likely to succeed from among several alternatives, and adapt it as necessary to the specific conditions; and solving previous problems-solving duties for large scale computer systems operating in a multiprocessing/multiprogramming environment and involving complex workload requirements. SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE FOR GS-9:
Applicants must have at least one (1) year of specialized experience at the next lower grade GS-08, or equivalent in other pay systems. Examples of specialized experience includes applying knowledge of computer operations to monitor the flow of message traffic, identify and correct systems problems, start and restart the system, load program, and operate peripheral devices through the console; using and maintaining a computer system, equipment, and software; analyzing computer network, software, and hardware problems and develop effective and economical solutions; and training users on new computer systems; and monitoring processing work flow, diagnosing, and resolving error and problem conditions involving many program interrelationships and interlocking computer systems. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (KSAs):
Your qualifications will be evaluated on the basis of your level of knowledge, skills, abilities and/or competencies in the following areas:
1. Knowledge of an in-depth body of telecommunications and computer operating systems and associated equipment configurations, including peripheral and teleprocessing equipment and connecting channels. 2. Knowledge of telecommunications and computer operations problem solving rules, procedures, techniques, and methods. 3. Knowledge of system control language and terms for console commands. 4. Knowledge of communication and security regulations, guidelines, traffic flow, and procedures. 5. Knowledge of the appropriate environmental standards necessary for continuous telecommunications and computer operations. 6. Ability to operate a computer having many peripheral devices. 7. Ability to isolate and resolve telecommunications and computer processing problems. 8. Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing. 9. Knowledge of computer operations to monitor the flow of message traffic; identify and correct systems problems; start and restart the system; load program; and operate peripheral devices through the console. 10. Ability to send messages in the proper formats, make necessary corrections if possible, or return the messages to the originators; route messages by referring to manuals when the messages are not directed to addresses that are routed automatically; distribute incoming messages to the proper addressees; request retransmission of garbled or incomplete messages from other centers and provide retransmissions to them as needed; and advise customers of proper telecommunications procedures. 11. Knowledge of DoD and Air Force automated data processing and networking standards, policies, and techniques. 12. Knowledge of computer hardware and software systems and their interfaces; and higher level programming languages comparable to COBOL and FORTRAN and other job control languages. 13. Knowledge of data content and output options for a variety of administrative, scientific and/or technical program applications that are processed on any of several multi-program operating systems. 14. Knowledge of facility environment and infrastructure to support computer systems. 15. Ability to use and maintain a computer system, equipment, and software; analyze computer network, software, and hardware problems and develop effective and economical solutions; and train users on new computer systems. Experience:

The check can be for multiple reasons such as signing bonus, supplies, etc. The victim will be instructed to deposit the check and use the money for any of these reasons and then instructed to send the remaining funds to the fraudster. The check will bounce and the victim is left responsible.
